Urban
Tango: The Agony and Ecstasy of Amateur Tango. In search of the elusive
embrace. The
performance was a limited engagement held two days only on September 9th
and September 10th at The Electric Lodge in Venice, California. The show was a tremendous success and
had an early advanced sell-out. In
response to overwhelming interest from the community, Urban Tango will reassemble
for a second engagement.
Information will be posted at http://www.makelatango.com/
Urban Tango is an original production by Makela Brizuela, performed by women and men of the Los Angeles Argentine tango community. Celebrated though the music and the dance of the tango, this story provided an unusual glimpse into the struggles, frustrations, and realizations in the discovery of the tango, as seen through the eyes of the female social dancer. Humorous and poignant, it reflected the journey of the challenges and personal growth of women through the exploration of Tango.
The
highlight of the show was surprise choreography danced by the director, Makela
Brizuela, with her professional tango partner Jorge Visconti to the music of
“Quejas de Bandoneon”. Mr. Visconti is the director and producer of the L.A.
Tango Festival and has participated in commercials directed by Oliver
Stone.
Following
the Sunday performance was a reception and “milonga” dance where cast and
audience joined together to have fun and dance tango. Many attendees who had
never before studied the dance had a chance to observe the dance in its social
form and speak with the dancers and performers.
