Milonga Etiquette
according to Makela Tango

"MILONGA": an event where people dance tango socially. 'Tango Club'.'Milonga' also means a type of tango dancing which is faster and playful.
  • Shower before the milonga. Limit the use of perfumes and colognes.
  • Wash your teeth, bring mints. Avoid chewing gum while dancing.
  • Smile a lot, bring good energy. Remember: sometimes you dance a lot with great dancers and it is great, some other times, it is not so great. That does not mean that you can't have a great time.
  • Try to dance with different people. If you are more intermediate, please dance with the beginners.
  • Leaders: try to keep the line of dancing counter clockwise and do not run into other people. Try not to cross the middle of the floor. Be courteous, avoid other people rather than wait for others to move. Be a 'defensive' dancer.  Make sure to protect your partner from collisions.
  • In a milonga you are not supposed to teach each other. Please do not talk while dancing. You can talk at the end of the song, or between TANDAS (a tango set of 4 songs that you are supposed to dance with the same person) during the CORTINA (a different kind of music that let you know that you are supposed to change partners). Please DO NOT DANCE to the CORTINA, instead leave the floor and seat to change partners.
  • Remember: it is bad etiquette to teach or talk when dancing in a milonga. In a PRACTICA is ok.
  • Followers: wear comfortable shoes/heels (supported-no flip flops or sandals) – practice your balance on your heels at home or come to the follower’s class on Tuesdays. Try to keep your stomach in and your tail bone tacked under, and allow connection to happen. Relax, breath, and trust that you are the best dancer in the world.
  • Leaders: give the lead, wait to make sure that your follower understood the lead. When the follower goes, then you go so you both step at the same time. There is a very short delay between leading, following, and following by the leader.
  • Have fun. Don’t forget to enjoy it!!
